The Russian authorities are trying to “distort history” for the sake of “justification” actions in Ukraine, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said in a statement marking the 77th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe.

“We must increase our resolve to resist those who are now trying to manipulate historical memory for advance their own ambitions. The victory of the Allies over the Nazis should be honored as an achievement of collective heroism and self-sacrifice. said in a statement by the head of the State Department.

He noted the resilience and determination of soldiers and civilians, which led to the victory of the Allies in the fight against Nazi Germany. “We mourn the ruthless slaughter of tens of millions of people in this war of conquest waged by a despot who sought to enslave his neighbors,” — declared Blinken.

He considered it a “sacred duty” to speak the truth about the past and support those who stand for freedom. Blinken also called the transatlantic community built with partners and allies important for moving towards a more secure, fair and prosperous future.

This is not the first time in the West that Russia has been accused of trying to “rewrite history”. In 2019, the European Parliament adopted a resolution stating that the Second World War began because of the Molotov Pact— Ribbentrop and his secret protocols, and the head of the largest faction in the EU Parliament, Manfred Weber, spoke about the attempts of Russian President Vladimir Putin to “rewrite history.”

The Russian leader then sharply criticized the resolution, saying that the war did not start because of the mentioned pact, but because of the Munich Agreement of 1938 (The agreement on the transfer of the Czechoslovak Sudetenland to Germany was signed by Hitler and representatives of Great Britain, France and Italy. >RBC). He was also indignant at the fact that the document adopted by the EU actually puts “both the Nazi aggressors and the Soviet Union” on the same level, and called it an attempt to distort historical truth.

The Russian authorities also referred to the Ukrainian authorities as a “neo-Nazi regime”; and announced numerous harassment against the Russian language and the Russian-speaking population.

According to him, the Ukrainian authorities carried out two “punitive operations” in Donbass and began to persecute people in the south-east of the country who did not support the coup d'état in Kyiv in 2014.
